Gerrit Rietveld Academie Studenten

Gerrit Rietveld Academie Studenten

The Gerrit Rietveld Academie is an international university of applied sciences for Fine Arts and Design in Amsterdam (NL). It is home to a close-knit, international community of students from across the world. Students and teachers jointly create a learning environment that brings together thinking and doing and where unexpected, innovative ideas are born.

The collaboration with SEA is an ongoing project initiated by former Rietveld docent Arthur Kempenaar together with Paulien Valk of SEA in an effort to integrate the ideas and projects of young artist in the context of a larger exhibition on  the island of Texel. The students and their teachers went to Texel for a week in November 2018 to experience the forest of Hoge Berg, while being presented a lecture by scientist Femke de Jong, who studies the ocean currents. In a clever subversion of the topic, the students were asked to react and relate their own process to her findings, not in the ocean but in the forest. It presents a challenge that might turn the notion of ocean currents on its head, but art has the ability to subvert abstract ideas, in this case climate, in a new context and thus create an exciting representation leading to new questions.
